The weight of the materials to repair the obsidian pick weight a total of 1.42 while a repair kit weights 2.5 so it is a small weight reduction to carry the repair materials at the added resource cost. Repairing an obsidian pick in your inventory is now more expensive than using a Master Weapon Repair Kit. This is very marginally cheaper than using a repair kit (when accounting for points of durability restored) with the added requirements of making the Composite Obsidian, and being at a blacksmith bench with a T4 Thrall.
The raw costs of repairing an Obsidian pick at the blacksmith bench with a T4 Thrall is 7 steel 35 obsidian and 5 wood. The benefit of the Repair kits is that you can get resource cost reduction from a T4 thrall so the Repair Kit only costs 3 Hardened Steel even when you are not at the blacksmith bench.
